Earnings from Tosha Khana gifts were the biggest income for Imran Khan in his lifetime, tax record shows

Imran could not earn in the first 66 years of his life as much as he earned through Tosha Khana gifts during the first two months as Prime Minister

Fact Focus is releasing the lifetime tax returns of Imran Khan (1981 to 2021). The tax record establishes that he and his wife Bushra haven’t declared the value of all the Tosha Khana gifts they retained.

Imran’s maximum earning from a professional or a business activity was Rs20 million in 2011. He earned Rs85 million during the first two months as the Prime Minister.

The total worth of all his properties and assets as declared by him in his latest tax return (FY 2021) is Rs141 million. The total value of Tosha Khana gifts retained by him was Rs142 million (as assessed by his own government).

Usman Manzoor

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan made more income in the first two months of office by choosing to retain Tosha Khana items than he had from any single professional or a business transaction throughout his life.

Contrary to the claims made by the former prime minister and his spokespersons, he hasn’t fully declared the gifts received by him from the Tosha Khana or the financial gains he made from these gifts in his annual tax returns.

This has been established by a Fact Focus investigation through official documents of the Cabinet Division and Imran Khan’s lifetime tax returns of 41 years. Fact Focus is releasing the lifetime tax record of Prime Minister Imran so the readers can evaluate the authenticity of the facts by themselves.

The financial gains by former Imran Khan from the Tosha Khana gift items are more than the declared value of any of the assets held by him in his entire life. The maximum value of an asset declared by Imran Khan so far is Rs48,660,000 which is of the construction at his Zaman Park house in Lahore. He made much more than this amount by selling only one Tosha Khana item.

In fact, the total value (Rs142,042,100) of these gifts retained by Imran, as assessed by his own PTI government, is more than his total wealth (Rs141,084,948) declared by him in his latest tax returns in the year 2021. Total wealth is the sum of declared values of all the properties, bank accounts, and the value of all immoveable or moveable assets.

Khan has often claimed to have the Midas touch. Through his golden touch, he managed to make his tenure as Prime Minister the most financially profitable of his career. How much money-spinning it could be to become the Prime Minister of a country like Pakistan can be well imagined from the fact that what Khan could not earn during the first sixty-six years of his life, he made during the first two months after becoming the Prime Minister before his 66th birthday in the second week of October of 2018. Imran Khan executed the biggest transaction of his life during the first two months after becoming the Prime Minister, bigger than any single transaction made in his entire life.

Imran Khan took the oath as the Prime Minister of Pakistan on August 18, 2018. He made his first-ever visit to Saudi Arabia as the Prime Minister on September 18, 2018.

From his marvelous cricket career to a star in advertisements, from playing county cricket in the UK to the commentary of cricket matches, Imran Khan could never earn the amount that he earned during his first few days in office. His tax returns show that the maximum amount he earned before becoming the Prime Minister was around Rs21.5 million (a little more than two crore rupees) from the commentary in 2011. During his first two months in office as the Prime Minister, he retained Tosha Khana gifts of the value of Rs106.383 million by paying only Rs21.32 million and hence earned Rs85.05 million (more than eight caror and fifty lac) during these 60 days. He also retained free gifts of a value of Rs163,000 during these initial two months. Overall, Imran retained gifts of a value of Rs142 million by paying Rs38.1 million and also kept gifts of the value of Rs800,200. He earned a profit of Rs103.865 million during his term as the prime minister merely from the Tosha Khana gifts.

Other than his business and professional ventures, he couldn’t earn this much money even by selling his property. He earned Rs69 million by selling his property in Ferozewala (near Lahore) in 2019 and he received even this amount in three years in installments of Rs23 million (2017), Rs27 million (2018), and Rs20 million (2019).

In his tax returns for the Financial Year (FY) 2018-19, Imran declared Rs39.58 million (Rs39,586,836) as an income from “Other Sources”. This amount, according to him, was the money that he made from the Tosha Khana gifts in this financial year. However, the value of the gifts retained by him in this period as assessed by his own government was Rs109 million (Rs109007500). He hasn’t declared any Tosha Khana items in this FY which means he sold all of them. Hence, it is clear misdeclaration. The value of only one item, a Rolex watch, was assessed by the PTI government at a value of Rs85 million.

In the case of his wife Bushra, she was not even registered for the tax purposes until July 12, 2021 (The FBR website screenshot showing her registration as a taxpayer is shown below in the image).

FBR website shows Bushra registered for tax on July 12, 2022.

Despite being registered as a taxpayer, she hasn’t submitted her tax returns and was a nonfiler until February 2022. Following two screenshots of the FBR website show her a nonfiler in the months of December 2021 and even on February 28, 2022. Her status as filer is shown as “Inactive”.

FBR website shows Bushra staus “In-Active” as a filer in December 2021.

FBR website shows Bushra’s status “In-Active” as a filer on February 28, 2022.

However, she became a filer on March 01, 2022. The following screenshot of the FBR website shows her status as a filer as “Active” on March 01, 2022.

FBR website shows Bushra’s status “Active” as a filer on March 01, 2022

There is no mention of any of his signed cricket bats being sold for tens of millions of rupees in his lifetime tax returns as is being portrayed by spokespersons of the Imran Khan.

When Imran Khan was retaining and subsequently selling the expensive Rolex watch gifted to Pakistan by Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman on September 18, 2018, he already had Rs9.6 million in his PKR bank accounts, Rs24.02 million cash in hand, USD381,230 in his dollar accounts, and GBP7,068 in his pound account.

Imran has been maintaining 300,000 to 500,000 United States dollars in his foreign currency accounts for the last ten years. He is also maintaining cash in hand of around 2 caror rupees (Rs2 million) for the last more than ten years.

In total, Imran Khan retained gifts of the value of Rs142 million by paying only Rs38.17 million along with retaining free gifts of the value of Rs800,200 hence earning a profit of Rs103.865 million during his three and a half years in the office of the Prime Minister.

During the FY 2018-19, Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi retained Tosha Khana gifts of the value of Rs109 million and paid only Rs21.9 million (20% of the value assessed by the PTI government itself). They also retained gifts of the value of Rs554,500 free of cost in this period.

In FY 2019-20, Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi retained Tosha Khana gifts of the value of Rs3.02 million and paid only Rs1.47 million. They also retained gifts of the value of Rs84,700 free of cost in this FY. IN the FY 2020-21, they retained gifts of the value of Rs29.49 million by paying Rs14.6 million. They also retained gifts of the value of Rs130,000 free of cost. Similarly, in FY 2021-22 (the first six months from July to December 2021), Imran and Bushra retained gifts of the value of Rs491,000 by paying an amount of Rs193,000. They also retained gifts of the value of Rs75,000 free of cost in these six months.

Here are the income tax returns of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from the year 1981 to the year 2021. Wealth statements and statements of assets and liabilities (which were submitted by him to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) during the years when he was a legislator.)
